死于打手的子弹和黑皮的警棍（From the bullets and batons of the thugs and police）：直译是“死于打手和警察的子弹和警棍”。

他们从潮头的船只掉落，上面飘着老板的方便旗（They fell from the derricks on the heaving tide, Under flags of convenience where the owners lied）：准确说，the derricks应译为“船只上的吊杆式起货设备”。

他们撞上火车车钩，死前痛苦无比（They fell from the derricks on the heaving tide, Under flags of convenience where the owners lied）：意思是火车（货车）调车，要用车钩重新连接车厢时，出了事故。

死于贫困时周身满是垃圾（Who were garbage flung aside when poverty was cruel）：这句中译前半似宜译为“她们成了被丢弃的垃圾”。
